Back at 1997 Lexus and Toyota decided to take security measures up a notch so instead of cutting a key and programming it via OBDII they require to take half the car apart and get to the ECU disassemble it and flash the correct chip.
It definitely made it more secure because if someone wanted to steal it, it would take them a few hours and in that time they can get caught.
However, it made the price of getting a new key made for your car a lot more expensive.
Dealers charge a lot for a new key and when I say a lot.....its means A LOT!
